Briede has a passion to teach

"I realised early on that teaching was more fulfilling for me. I think it’s so important to help kids be physically active."

Edenvale resident and Kensington golf teacher Martin Briede recently won the PGA of South Africa’s Grow Golf Award.

Briede, who teaches at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club, received the award for his efforts in teaching the game to children and training PGA professionals and educators in how to teach golf to children.

“I feel so privileged to have won this award. It was voted for by my peers in the PGA South Africa. That makes it even more special,” said Briede.

Briede said the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club has been instrumental and supported his vision to use golf to improve the physical literacy of children.

Briede, who has been at the club for almost 25 years, said the club has always supported him.

Like many PGA professionals, Briede’s initial dream was to play golf for a living.

Today he manages the junior coaching module for the PGA of South Africa and runs the PGA of SA’s Grow Golf programme.

“I realised early on that teaching was more fulfilling for me. I think it’s so important to help kids be physically active. With today’s technology, getting children to be active is more important than it’s ever been,” said Briede.

Briede said he constantly thirsts knowledge and hopes to improve himself.

He said by learning more he can help others.
