No stopping Jason on soccer field

Cerebral palsy soccer player shines as bright as he knows how.

As a flagship event on the disabled sports calendar, the 2019 South Africa Sport Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD) National Championships’ Cerebral Palsy (CP) Football Tournament was held in Stellenbosch.

Jason nudges at the ball with his eyes firmly fixed.

The event, from March 17 to 21, once again showcased its penchant as an exciting sport which combines speed, agility and impressive ball-handling skills. It is an extravaganza for budding disabled soccer talent, such as Jason Smith, a star of the local Cerebral Palsy (CP) Soccer Club in Joburg, who resides in Bedfordview.

Jason bags a superb goal against Eastern Cape.

His exploits at the 2018 National School Summer Championships hosted at Marks Park in December, which earned him the call-up to the Gauteng provincial disabled side, was once again on display as Jason delivered the goods at the Stellenbosch spectacle.

Jason showcases his team’s bronze medal at the end of an exciting tournament in which Gauteng placed third.

His side competed against four other regions in KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, North-West and Eastern Cape. The Kensington-based Oak House Vocational Academy learner managed to bag a solitary goal in the game against the latter. Gauteng eventually secured the bronze medal with an overall third-place finish.

Perennial supporter and mom Jennie Smith said her son’s achievements have been particularly heart-warming to see. “We are super proud of him, as he has achieved what we thought would never be possible,” she said.

Jason is hoisted in the air after a brilliant solo effort by him to score a goal.

Jason was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and epilepsy when he was only six months old. This has done little to slow him down as he continues to make big strides at the CP Soccer Club and beyond.
