Edenvale swimmers break records at national champs

Breaking multiple records, the 2019 Senior Open Nationals was Mckenzie's most successful to date.

Two swimmers from Aquatic Academy Swimming Club ESP Aquatics competed in the recent 2019 South African Open and Youth Aquatic Championships where they swam against some of the country’s top swimmers.

Kyle Mckenzie (18) qualified in several events for the SA Open Championship (junior elite 23 years and younger), breaking records set in 1995 and 1994.

Mckenzie swam 2:09.28 and broke the previous record of 2:14.93 for the 200m set in 1995.

He swam 4:38.18 and broke the previous record of 4:54.66 for the 400m set in 1994.

He went on to smash the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:23.53, improving on the previous record of 2:31.71.

He then lowered the Gauteng 100m breaststroke record from 1:08.74 to 1:07.64.

Breaking multiple records, the 2019 Senior Open Nationals was Mckenzie’s most successful competition to date.

Not to be outdone, 14-year-old Bernelee Doster qualified to compete in the championships in the youth category (23 years and under).

Kyle Mckenzie and Bernelee Doster from Aquatic Academy Swimming Club/ESP Aquatics flank South African Olympian Douglas Erasmus at the 2019 South African Open, and Youth Aquatic Championships.

She also broke a record set in 1995 when she swam 1:07.94 in the 100m backstroke, improving on the previous record of 1:10.38.

Her accomplishment resulted in her winning a gold medal and senior qualifying time.

Doster then went on to lower the provincial record set in 1995 for the 200m backstroke with a time of 2:27.67 (previous time 2:31.71), narrowly missing a bronze medal.

She set another record for the 50m backstroke with a record time of 32.59 (previous 33.05).

International swimmers of the calibre of Chad le Clos, Brad Tandy, Ayerton Sweeney, Douglas Erasmus and Tatiana Schoenmacher were also in attendance.
