The match aimed to give former players from the National First Division (NFD) League a chance to return to the field and test their skills against other teams.
“It is still early in the year. I just want to bring the players back to the soccer field. Here they can unwind and be reminded about their glory days,” said the coach for Polokwane Rovers, Shoes Mtsweni, from Yeoville.
“Many of the players are older. Polokwane Rovers plan to sign young players onto the team.
“We are looking for players who are determined and who are willing to work hard to take the football club far. But for now I just want the older players to enjoy themselves, no matter if they win or lose,” he said.
The match started late in the afternoon, when Polokwane Rovers took on Red Devils FC.
The Rovers felt prepared and ready to reignite their A-game.
The Red Devils’ coach, Samuel Muyeni, had a problem with his side’s defence, as the team struggled to contain Rovers’ attack.
Both sides worked hard in their attempts to strike goals in the second half, to no avail.
Muyeni gave props to the Polokwane Rovers.
“I expected them to win, but we kept them busy. My team didn’t play according to the game-play. For now, it is back to training and taking the time to identify where we are lacking,” said Muyeni.
Mtsweni was happy with his side’s performance and excited about the talent still evident in his players.
“We played well. Seeing the players out on the field helped me identify their existing skills.”
