Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy has invited community members living in and around Edenvale to join it in a clean-up initiative.
The academy attracts players from Kensington, Bez Valley and several other Joburg East areas.
The initiative, set to take place on February 15, will see volunteers clean Van Riebeeck Avenue.
Forty members from the Lions academy and several others from a Parktown academy are already involved.
Edson Makavan, founder of and coach at the academy, said the clean-up is not limited to basketball players and encouraged community members to join in.
“Through this initiative, I want to inspire people to complain less and to make a difference in their town.”
On the day, volunteers will remove illegal advertisements and pick up litter.
Makavan highlighted that the academy enjoys working and engaging with the community.
He believes helping the community is one of the best ways to do that.
“Working with the community gives us greater exposure.
“Each year we try to have two or three events through which we help the community.”
To make the day even more enjoyable, the academy partnered with Jack Russell Estates, STBB Bedfordview and the Dowerglen SPAR.
Daryl Sogot of Jack Russell Estates said the three companies will supply the rolls, boerewors and refreshments.
“Our company has been in Edenvale for 20 years, and we are more than happy to lend a hand and help others,” said Sogot.
“It feels great to be part of this initiative “
Jodi Shneier from STBB Bedfordview said she too is looking forward to the event.
Makavan encouraged those interested in helping to bring plastic bags, gloves, brooms and paint scrapers.
The clean-up will run from 8am to 11am, volunteers will meet in the parking lot behind De Bakery.
After the clean-up, a basketball match will be played at the sports grounds which will give those interested in joining a taste of what the academy is all about.
