Edenvale FC held to draw by Luso Africa in SAFA Regional League

The Senior Ladies team at Edenvale Football Club (FC) drew 1-1 with Luso Africa Ladies FC in the return leg of their South African Football Association (SAFA) Regional League fixture on July 25 at Edenvale Football Club.

Edenvale FC coach Kyran Jugdharree said the Senior Ladies are in their second season in the SAFA Regional League, an open-age competition comprising predominantly players aged 17 and older.

Jugdharree said the team’s goal was to continue its winning streak after winning all eight of its previous league matches, including a 2-1 victory over Luso earlier this season.

“Our aim was to play the free-flowing, fast-attacking football that has been a highlight of our season,” he said.

He said Saturday’s match served as a reminder that every game presents a different challenge and that success can never be taken for granted.

“While we were not at our best, the team showed resilience by fighting until the final whistle to remain unbeaten in the league this season,” Jugdharree said.

He added that the team would use the performance as a learning opportunity and focus on improving its intensity, movement and consistency.

Jugdharree said girls’ football plays an important role in the community by creating opportunities for young women to grow both on and off the field.

“It builds confidence, discipline, teamwork and leadership while promoting healthy lifestyles and a sense of belonging. Beyond developing footballers, it empowers girls to believe in themselves and become positive role models who inspire the next generation,” he said.

The coach said the players remain motivated by being reminded of the standards they have set and the goals they are working towards together.

“Every match, whether it’s a win or not, is an opportunity to learn and improve. We celebrate the team’s progress, encourage a positive mindset and make sure the players continue enjoying their football while staying focused on working hard for one another and representing Edenvale FC with pride,” Jugdharree said.

With five weeks remaining in the season, the club is seeking sponsorship to help cover transport costs, as the team does not have a clubhouse. Potential sponsors can contact Louis Antonopoulous on 082 567 6776.

Meanwhile, Luso Africa Ladies FC coach Dylan Willson said the club has been producing some of the country’s finest football talent for many years, with several players having represented South Africa and played overseas.

He said the team has experienced both highs and lows while competing in different leagues and was crowned the SAFA Ekurhuleni champions last year.

Willson said Edenvale preferred a direct style of play, but his side managed to neutralise it while maintaining possession for much of the match.

“We were the better team on the day and deserved to walk away with three points,” he said.

Willson said the team’s biggest lesson was the need to convert the chances it created. Ahead of the next fixture, the focus will be on improving fitness and finishing.

He added that keeping girls involved in sport is essential, as it keeps them active and off the streets.

He also said clubs such as Luso Africa are important because experienced players, including some in their forties, set a positive example for younger teammates coming through the ranks.
