Child welfare run a happy event

Runners lined up to make a difference the life of a child, one step at a time.

Families and supporters of the Greater Benoni Child and Family Welfare basked in the sun to take part in the organisation’s inaugural Heritage Family Fun Run on October 3.

With their laces fastened and jovial spirits filling Third Avenue, Northmead, participants lined up to take on a 5km loop, while little ones tested their mettle in 1km dash.

“What a way to celebrate Spring, our heritage and showcase our organisation,” said director Vanessa Carelse.

“It is our vision to make this an annual event to form part of the society’s fundraising efforts, but also encourage members of the community to engage with the children in our care.

“By creating a family-friendly environment, our children will get the opportunity to socialise with their neighbours, thus communicating to them that they are part of a wider community who care about their well-being.”

Before the starting hooter signalled the start of the run, Grace Nkosi of Lakefield said she supported the event as a way to give back.

“We may not know the exact circumstances that brought children into the care of the organisation, but we can support their care by putting our hands up and participating,” she said.

“No one can live and flourish in isolation. By showing up, we are telling the kids that their lives and happiness matter to us.”

Under the watchful eye of CMS security personnel, ensuring runner safety, the event was a joyous affair, with little ones sprinting towards the finish line to collect goodie bags crammed with treats, sponsored by Cubby Chums a Child Protection Organization, in Primrose.
