Hijacker shot dead

A would-be car hijacker died in an exchange of gun fire, in Western Extension, at around 7pm, on July 2.

Four men were planning to hijack a Turvey Street resident’s vehicle, when the incident occurred.

“The resident was approached by a man, armed with a firearm, when he went to close a gate after returning from work,” said police spokesman Lieut Nomsa Sekele.

Sekele said the resident immediately ran to his car, where he quickly grabbed his firearm.

“The would-be hijacker fired a shot first, but missed, and the resident retaliated, hitting the man once in his upper body; his accomplices ran away,” said Sekele.

Sekele said the man was certified dead by paramedics who arrived on the scene, shortly after the shooting.

The dead man was also found to be in possession of a wallet belonging to another resident, who was hijacked earlier in the day, in the same area.

Sekele said the owner of the wallet identified it, and his car was found abandoned, after the thieves realised it had a tracker.
