This brings to seven the total number of Nigerians killed in the area within two weeks, after three were gunned down inside a shop on Voortrekker Street, on June 22.
Police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said five Nigerians were in a VW Golf 5 at the intersection of Elston Avenue and Bunyan Street, when unknown gunmen sprayed their car with bullets.
“Two were found dead in the car,” said Sekele.
Others got out of the car and tried to flee, but two of them collapsed a few metres from the car.
“One was found dead and the other was critically injured,” said Sekele.
ER24 paramedic Liam Hardy said the critically injured man died later, in the Tambo Memorial Hospital.
One man survived the shooting unscathed.
Sekele said police suspect rivalry between two groups could be the motive for the shooting.
He said one of the men who died in Voortrekker Street was said to be “a group leader”.
The assailants fled the scene after the shooting and police are investigating.
Both shooting incidents occurred at around 6pm, when police change shifts.
In the previous shooting, the assailants were said to have fled in a green BMW.
Sekele said police will question the surviving man for more information.
