Dumped plastic stirs anger

A number of business owners are up-in-arms about a company that is dumping plastic waste on an empty property on Dagenham Road.

“This has been going on for a long time; the plastic waste that is being dumped here is not only a health hazard, but also a fire hazard,” said an angry business owner.

“The smell is unbearable; there are so many rats and snakes in this area because of all the plastics on that property.

A plastic recycling company on Bolton Road was accused of dumping its waste on the property, but denied this.

“The only place we are dumping our waste is at the municipal landfill site,” said one of the owners.

“We don&’t know who all that plastic belongs to, but if no one is using it, because it is recyclable we would be more than happy to take it and use it.”

According to Sam Modiba, metro spokesperson, nobody is allowed to dump any type of refuse except at an approved landfill site.

“Dumping is a punishable offence and residents who are found dumping will be fined,” he said.

He concluded by saying that people who are caught dumping illegally should be reported to the Environmental Health Division, EMPD and Benoni Solid Waste Division on 011 999 6825.
