Conman magistrate wants to ‘retire’

A man who posed as a magistrate told the Benoni Magistrates Court to speed up his case, because he wants to "retire" from his job.

Sisa Mpangeni allegedly posed as a Benoni court magistrate and conned people out of money by promising them jobs.

Police said he operated between March and June, and allegedly charged people R9 100 each, promising them jobs at the Benoni Magistrates Court in return.

A total of 11 people in Benoni were conned.

Mpangeni was arrested in Virginia, in the Free State, where he also conned people, by promising them jobs at the municipality in return for payment.

On August 16, he appeared in the Benoni Regional Court, where he also indicated his lack of interest in applying for bail.

Investigating officer Const Frans Madubanya said that Mpangeni claims to have been doing “the job” since 1992.

“He also claims he was a prosecutor in Boksburg, but quit due to unsatisfactory pay,” said Madubanya.

Mpangeni requested that all his cases be centralised because he does not want to “run from one court to another”.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear again on September 6.

Police are calling on all his victims to come forward.
