Sewage leak interrupts business in Apex

A constant sewage leak has been causing an inconvenience to Kopex Africa, in Apex, for over three years, with no final solution found yet.

The sewage water rises out of a man hole in front of their offices, at 6 Hamburg Road, as well as from a sewage pump across from them, resulting in large amounts of water in front of and inside their premises.

“Sometimes it is like a lake on our grounds,” said Devan Moodley, the production manager.

He claims this flooding happens often.

“It has gone on for a few years, but got worse in the last four months,” he added.

The company has reported the situation to the Ekurhuleni Metro three times, but to no avail.

Moodley said they have also phoned the health department.

Each time it overflows, a quick fix is done to a pump, but only for the problem to reappear.

It is said to have gone from a monthly incident to a weekly one.

When the toilets are flushed they, too, overflow and, thus, cannot be used until the sewage system is fixed.

Moodley said that they arranged for a plumber to come in, but he was unable to provide assistance, as the flooding is a municipal problem, related to the sewage lines.

The company purchased sand bags to cover the leak around the man hole and dug trenches in an attempt to stop the water from flowing to their factory and parking area.

They also have to cover the water leakage with disinfectant to erase the smell.

Comment was requested from the Ekurhuleni Metro three weeks ago, but had not been provided at the time of going to print.
