Second-last round is a nail-biter
The second-last round in the heat rounds of the Caxton Reynolds Race 2013 took all 12 teams to Emperors Palace, in Kempton Park, where they had to complete various tasks in order to submit their proof to the organisers of the competition.
This round was harder than any other round, but teams have shown organisers that they have the spirit and enthusiasm needed to compete in a race of such magnitude.
Results of this round (round six) are:
The Germiston City News team, Hennie and Louise Bingle, came in first, Kempton Express team, Ashleigh Schnetler and Dane van Tonder, are in second place, and the Southern Courier team, Deshan and Prema Naran, are in third place.
Once at Emperors Palace, teams had to go to the Codesa Walkway. The walkway was developed in commemoration of the Codesa negotiations that took place within the walls of what is now Emperors Palace.
The walkway highlights the negotiations that took place and depicts historical events occurring at the time, with displays augmented by copies of newspapers, press articles and interviews from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Next weekend (August 30) will see teams go to their last round on the East Rand, after which the three teams with the highest scores will go through to the final race on September 21, which will take them to various locations and require them to do even more than they are at the moment. But, with sponsors such as SA Reynolds Travel Centre, Hirsch’s, Daihatsu, Budget Car Insurance, Thompsons Holidays and the Boksburg Rugby Club, this race will be one to remember.
