Benoni SPCA needs help to renovate
The Benoni SPCA can finally start renovating their premises after a six year preparation to move.
After being under the impression that the municipality wanted them to move, the Benoni SPCA was planning on moving to a property on Springs Road in Petit.
Diane Wooldridge, current chairwoman of the Benoni SPCA, said that she recently arranged a meeting with the town planners, who confirmed that they were happy for them to stay on the ground.
She said that their lawyer arranged for the cancellation of their move, which was just in time, as they would have had to be off the premises shortly due to phase one of the legal procedures being near completion.
“The buyers were so kind and understanding that we did not want to sell anymore,” said Wooldridge.
The Benoni SPCA has not done much maintenance during the selling period, as the premises were going to be demolished and converted into a gym.
She explained that she has plenty of renovation and maintenance plans for the SPCA.
She said that the move was a concern to them, as it would have been further away from most of the public’s reach.
“I am so pleased that we can stay as far as what concerns the animals,” she added.
However they are short in funds to beautify and repair the property, and Wooldridge said that plenty of fundraisers will need to be held to afford renovations.
Their first priority is to repair or replace their drainage system that is 60 years old, and causes many problems.
Other plans include a garden, improvement of block B, and new kennels.
Wooldridge initiated the invitation for businesses to donate kennels on which they can place their logos.
They are appealing to the public to donate any excess paint and building materials, especially concrete and sand, as well as blankets and dry dog food for the animals.
They are also in need of a retired person, with good business connections, to join the committee.
Wooldridge is also reminding the public that their Christmas fund will be starting in the near future and the Benoni SPCA would love the public to dig deep this year especially.
Any other donations or help will be appreciated, and they can be visited at their premises at 3 Klein Street, Lakefield.
