Stolen cars recovered at a chop shop

The Benoni police recovered two vehicles at a chop shop on Friday, October 4,

This follows a joint operation focusing on scrap yards and panel beaters in the area, by members of the Germiston Organised Crime Unit, Benoni detectives and Benoni cluster flash officers.

Flash officers focus only on scrap yards, panel beaters and shops dealing in secondhand goods.

Police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said that a Golf One and a Quantum taxi suspected to have been stolen were impounded.

No one has been arrested, but investigations are continuing.

During the operation, police arrested two men in possession of wheel rims after they failed to prove ownership.

Sekele said the operation was prompted by the escalating number of motor vehicle thefts in the area and also to check if secondhand dealers are complying with the terms of their licences.

A total of 14 such places were searched and Sekele said the operation is on-going.
