N12 lights kept on to prevent crime

Contractors responsible for installing the lights on parts of the N12 have kept the lights burning 24/7 to reduce the risk of cable theft and vandalism, according to Sanral manager for planning, design and construction, Willem van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe revealed this in response to questions put by Clr Mary Goby, after she and other Benoni councillors received complaints about the lights being on all hours of the day.

‘‘They are in a process of commissioning and testing the installations in daytime,’’ said van der Merwe.

‘‘The installations are also more prone to cable theft and vandalism during this period.

‘‘The contractors, therefore, also choose to keep the lighting on as an installation security measure.’’

It is expected that the lights between the R21 and the Daveyton off-ramps will be handed over to Sanral in the next month.
