Rynpark gardens open day
Residents, assisted by Van Ryn Rotary Club, will hold an Open Garden Day, at Rynpark Four, Five and Six, on Saturday, October 26 from 10am to 4pm, to raise funds for needy residents in Rynpark.
The Open Gardens Day is the brain child of Sue Kimber, who initiated the project a few months ago and soon had the support of management and several enthusiastic gardening residents.
The Rynpark Retirement Village, consisting of seven parks and managed by the Rynpark Association for the Aged, houses over 1 200 pensioners in apartments, life right cottages and frail care facilities.
Many of the residents in the older parks have lived there for 20 years and more and are now well into their 80s and 90s.
Due to the ever rising cost of living, many folk are in need of financial assistance, which is provided in part by the Rynpark Welfare Fund, by means of subsidised meal tickets, medical requirements, etc.
An entrance fee of R20 per person (children under 12 years of age are free) will be charged for the gardens.
Entrance will be at the Rynpark Five security gate and secure off-road parking will be available free of charge.
Visitors are then free to walk around between the three parks which inter-lead with each other and admire the lovely gardens.
There will be a tea garden in Rynpark Six, run by the Rotary Anns.
Cold drinks and water will also be available in the other two parks throughout the day.
Rotary will be manning the entrance gate and will also be providing golf cart and wheelchair assistance to frail care residents and any other elderly visitor who may be in need of this service.
A few of the residents will also display their artistic talents and raffle tickets will be sold by residents.
All funds raised will go to the Rynpark Welfare Fund.
The parks have never been opened to the public before and it is hoped that this will become a regular annual fund-raising event.
