Teen to be tried in high court

The 14-year-old Etwatwa boy who shocked the nation by allegedly butchering four members of his family with an axe, will be tried in the High Court in Delmas.

He was found fit to stand trial after undergoing psychiatric observation at the Sterkfontein Mental Hospital.

Benoni Magistrates Court senior prosecutor December Mthimunye said that the director of public prosecutions has decided that the case will be heard in a High Court.

“We are only awaiting a date,” said Mthimunye.

The boy attacked his family at midnight, on Friday, May 24, killing his mother and two siblings, and critically injuring his grandmother, who later died in hospital.

Police believed the attack to be a satanic ritual.

The boy now faces four murder charges and will remain in a place of safety until his next court appearance.
