A healthy feast at Oakuccino
In this day and age, it is quite burdensome to maintain a healthy and nutritious diet, as living has become such a rush and, as a result, there is only limited time to prepare our own meals.
If you are a person who values healthy living, I have discovered a gold mine for you.
My favourite part about my recent lunch experience at Oakuccino coffee shop was that I was actually full for the rest of the day, for a change.
Operating since October, this coffee shop caters according to blood types and offers sugar-free, dairy-free and gluten-free meals.
On the menu, meals are listed according to blood types, however, not being sure what our blood types are, we just ordered at random.
I went with a walnut and tuna salad and Tumelo had the red pepper and beef salad, which were complemented with delicious fruit smoothies.
My salad was juicy, fresh and delicious, with the walnuts and tuna creating the perfect flavour-combination.
To satisfy the sweet tooth, our delightful experience was ended off with a warm Lindt choc pudding.
This was a warm spongy pudding, coated with an indulgent creamy chocolate sauce.
“That was really nice, surprisingly, considering that it didn’t have any sugar in it,” said my colleague.
We also enjoyed the coffee shop’s signature hot drink, titled Oakuccino, which is a normal cappuccino, with an extra shot of espresso, cinnamon and honey.
This was mouth-watering and, being someone who enjoys new things, a total treat for me.
I was surprised that something that does not contain sugar can be so sweet and tasty.
The coffee shop is co-owned by Anette Botha and her daughter, Joni.
Anette was inspired to open the shop after having to cut out gluten from her diet for her own health circumstances, and Joni followed by trying out the blood type diet, too.
“I was sceptical about the blood type diet at first, until I started doing it and felt the difference,” said Joni.
The principle of this lifestyle is to eat more, smaller portions.
“You cannot cut out meals; it will slow down your metabolism rate,” said Anette.
Anette said they aim to create an environment in which people can have a good time engaging socially, while being able to eat healthily.
Instead of wheat, rice flour, almond flour and millet are used in meals.
They substitute sugar with Xylitol and, instead of milk, they use soy milk and rice milk, but have cow milk available for those who prefer it.
I left Oakuccino feeling amazing energised and, once again, very full.
“For once I did not feel guilty after eating,” said Tumelo.
The shop also offers SCIO therapy with a device that stimulates the body to relax, reduce stress and balance the different functions.
Oakuccino is situated on 26 Oak Street, Northmead.TB
