Fire at well-known restaurant
The owner of Lemongrass Restaurant, in Western Extension, has received hundreds of commiserative messages since a fire destroyed parts of the 14-year-old restaurant at the weekend.
Owner Ivonne Taylor said she has received hundreds of well wishes from customers, friends, opposition businesses and councillors, following the fire, which started in the early hours of Saturday morning, November 23.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you that a section of our beautiful restaurant was destroyed by fire in the early hours of Saturday morning, a few days short of its 15th birthday,” said Taylor, in a press release.
“The fire started in our main dining area and has gutted some of our prized antiques, beautiful artworks, Oregon floors and wonderful pressed ceilings.
Many of the collectibles and furniture were collected over a 14-year period.
Taylor said approximately half of the furniture was salvaged on the night of the fire, because community members, the police and CPF removed items from the eatery while the fire was blazing.
Taylor said she was “very, very sad” when she heard about the fire, but she is set on restoring Lemongrass to its former glory.
“Please bear with us during this emotional and trying time,” she said in the press release.
“After 14 years in business, this restaurant has become like a home to many – both customers and staff.
“We will endeavour to restore the restaurant to its former glory, so that we can continue sharing the Lemongrass spirit with our loyal friends and customers for many more years to come.”
Lemongrass is closed for business.
Taylor said customers will be accommodated at the sister restaurant, Tajine, which is situated next to Lemongrass.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
