E-toll is bitter pill, but….
Gauteng roads and transport MEC Ismail Vadi said that the e-tolling on our highways is a bitter bill to swallow, but there is no choice.
Vadi justified e-toll system during the opening of a newly completed traffic circle in Actonville, on November 25, saying our roads are now a “world class system”.
“In terms of road infrastructure, South Africa is ranked at number 10 in the world,” said the MEC.
Vadi added that the road network is under pressure and has to be improved, because it contributes to economic growth.
“Building highways is an expensive business and there was no money,” he said.
“Government had to loan money and the user-pay principle was the only option to pay it back.”
He said 201km of Gauteng roads were improved and added that a further 365km need upgrading.
Part of Vadi’s “25-year dream” is to build a completely new highway, for trucks only, around Gauteng.
