The St Dunstan’s College pupil seemed to have overcome this as he obtained nine distinctions in the 2013 Independent Examinations Board (IEB) examinations.
He aced Afrikaans first additional language, English home language, geography, life orientation, life sciences, mathematics (top one per cent), advanced programme mathematics, mathematics paper three and physical sciences.
“I was quite surprised with my results; I had no idea how I had done,” said Horne.
The swimmer and athlete with provincial colours for water polo and life saving said he was hoping for at least six distinctions.
Horne will study medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand this year and will look to specialise once he completes his course.
He said he has always wanted to help people.
Horne advised the 2014 matric class to put in a bit of work every day and to play sport to keep the mind active.
