Benoni Muslim School girl bags eight distinctions

The desire to please her parents motivated Zainab Motala (18) to get eight distinctions in her matric results.

The Benoni Muslim School learner scored distinctions in English first language, Afrikaans additional home language, Arabic, mathematics, accounting, life sciences, physical science and life orientation.

Zainab, whose mother died five years ago, said she was challenged by friends and relatives who put pressure on her to pass matric.

But the challenge also motivated her to do well.

“The main challenge, though, was being consistent with my school work,” she said.

Zainab also had to find time to serve in the Benoni Muslim Organisation, where they do various charity drives, including for Syria.

“I was also involved in preparing packs for the underprivileged during Ramadan (a Muslim fasting month),” said Zainab.

She is also part of the Benoni Ladies Forum.

Zainab is taking a break from studies this year, and is planning to study dentistry in 2015.

She advises those doing matric to strive for consistency in their school work.

Zainab said that learners should actually start having fixed routines from as far back as Grade 11 and that they should never be afraid to ask for help from their teachers and fellow pupils.

“The most important thing is to respect your educators and your knowledge,” she said.
