Benoni High School matriculant Annie Fang spent her time on social media, not to procrastinate, but to interact with friends and discuss the work they were learning for the exams.
“I could not understand why parents of children in my grade refused to allow their children to go onto social media,” said Fang.
“It is necessary to go onto social media to talk to friends and get help with work.”
The 19-year-old seems to have spent this time well, after scoring eight As in the 2013 National Senior Certificate examinations.
She aced Afrikaans first additional language, life orientation, mathematics, mathematics paper three, accounting, business studies, geography and physical sciences.
Fang missed her ninth distinction by one per cent, but is hopeful of obtaining nine once her English paper is remarked.
The teenager, who also wrote and directed a house play at the school, emphasised the importance of time management and a good balance between the books and extra-mural activities in school.
She said children must select a method of studying that works for them.
Fang said she made notes of her work through the course of the year and went over the notes the night before her exams.
She will study actuarial sciences at the University of Pretoria, this year.
