Mother found guilty of dumping baby in an old fridge

Daveyton resident Thando Mboni was found guilty of child neglect and sentenced to three years correctional supervision, on January 16, in the Benoni Magistrates Court.

The 32-year-old mother of two was arrested on May 6, last year, after she admitted to giving birth and dumping the baby in an old fridge, on May 4.

The conditions of her sentencing are:

  •  She has been placed under house arrest, but will be given consideration during working hours.
  •  She is not allowed to drink or take any drugs, other than those prescribed by a doctor.
  •  She has to do 16 hours of community service on a monthly basis.
  •  She is not allowed to travel outside her derestricted area without informing her correctional officer.
  •  She will attend a life skills programme.
  •  She will attend an anger management programme.
  •  More programmes will be added by the correctional officer if the need arises.

The dumped baby, who was dubbed Nompilo Eve Winter by a Benoni resident and nurses at the Far East Hospital, is currently eight months old and is being cared for in a place of safety.
