Illegal miners face arrest

There are reports that 10 illegal miners surfaced from the ventilation shaft on the corner of Range View and Snake roads this morning.

Some of the miners to surface this morning have been negotiating with their comrades to exit the shaft.

According to Gold One vice-president of investor relations Grant Stuart there are 15 miners who are still underground, excluding the ones who surfaced yesterday.

Stuart said the miners have said that there are 200 additional miners operating in the East Rand basin.

The miners have also indicated that this shaft was used as an exit point only.

Stuart said the shaft was closed by Gold One, who own the mining rights of the New Kleinfontein mine, in December last year.

A total of 11 miners surfaced yesterday and were arrested shortly afterwards.

Benoni SAPS media liaison officer Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the six miners who surfaced this morning will be arrested this afternoon.

All 17 miners will be charged with illegal mining.

The 11 miners who were arrested yesterday are being detained at the Benoni Police Station.

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services are still attempting to free the remaining miners.
