All in the name of love

After meeting on a blind date almost 55 years ago, Benoni residents Gus (74) and Joan (70) Ratering have been married for 50 years.

The pair was introduced by a friend, who told them that they would be perfect for each other.

They married in 1963 and had three children, Karen, David and Lisa.

“We don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day, because we believe every day should be Valentine’s Day,” said Joan.

“The three most important things in a marriage are respect, regard for each other and communication.”

They both emphasised the importance of communication.

“Even if you quarrel, you are still communicating,” said Gus.

“Most young people now get married with the thought that if it does not work out they can get divorced,” said Joan.

Their advice for the youth is to work hard through all the difficult times and not to throw in the towel.
