Woman freed from car wreckage, airlifted to hospital

A man and woman sustained serious injuries in a car collision this morning (February 20).

It took rescue workers an hour to free the woman, who was later airlifted to hospital by a medical helicopter, and 30 minutes to free the man, who was transported to the Tambo Memorial Hospital.

The head on collision occurred at the intersection of Birch and Forest roads.

ER24 spokesperson Luyanda Matjila said the 60-year-old man’s bakkie collided with an SUV.

The bakkie was carrying two men at the back, and they were sent flying in the collision.

They sustained minor injuries and were transported to hospital.

The driver of the SUV was left uninjured.

Police are investigating the cause of the collision.
