Campaign for indigents

An informative campaign to discuss the process and requirements for people who may register as indigents will be held in Chief Albert Luthuli Park, on Saturday, February 22.

The campaign, which has been organised by ward councillor Refiloe Nt’sekhe, will be held at the sports ground on the corner of Putfontein Road and Mediterranean Street, at 10am.

Officials from the health and social development’s indigents office, as well as credit control officials, will be present.

Nt’sekhe said many people are unaware that they can register as indigents if they earn a joint household income of less than R2 500 a month.

Indigent support will be given on a monthly basis, and the extent of the monthly support will be determined by the national policy guidelines and the council’s budgetary provisions in respect of:

  •  free basic water;
  •  free refuse collection;
  •  free basic electricity or energy (depending on which service level is applicable);
  •  free basic sanitation and
  •  assessment rates in respect of residential property registered in the name of the qualifying indigent owner, subject to the maximum amount, as determined by council from time to time.
