Beware of the flat tyre scam

TL writes by email:

I want to warn the public of a new scam that is going on.

This is what happened to me last Friday, in the basement parking at Oakfields shopping centre.

When I returned with my shopping and wanted to leave, one of the car guards pointed out to me that I had a flat left front tyre.

I did not understand why that tyre would have gone flat so quickly, as my front tyres are brand new and were fine when I parked the car.

The car guard saw my confusion and told me that he knew a guy who could change the tyre for me if I had a spare one.

Thinking that this was an act of medeleven I agreed he should call that man.

A tall  man arrived and proceeded to open my boot to check on the spare tyre.

While doing that he asked me if I knew what his charge was.

No, I didn’t know, and he proceeded to tell me that it was R150 for changing the tyre.

I asked him if he was mad to charge so much and told him that I did not have or want to pay that much money for changing a tyre.

He then told me I could give him R60 for the job.

As I thought this also exorbitant I told him to leave it and that I was going to phone a family member who lives close by.

He left and went to look busy near the shopping trolleys, apparently hoping that I would change my mind, which I didn’t, because by then a little red warning light had come on in my brain.

Family to the rescue and tyre changed I then took it to the nearest garage to have it checked for leaks.

Nothing wrong. The air must have been let our deliberately, so that the members of the scam could cash in on my misfortune.

What will they think of next?
