Woman gives away R20 000 to ‘undercover cops’

Two men were arrested after allegedly extorting R20 000 from a woman who was drawing money at an ATM.

The suspects were arrested in Chief Albert Luthuli Park, on February 20.

The men, aged 42 and 30, apparently extorted money from a woman who was withdrawing money at a mall in Boksburg.

One of the men distracted the victim at the ATM and, a few seconds later, another of the men allegedly approached the victim, and told her he was an undercover police officer who was stationed around the corner monitoring ATM robberies.

“The victim fell for the story and went to the bogus cops, who convinced her to withdraw the money and give it to them,” said Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz.

“They (bogus police) were going to keep the money safe due to the fact that the victim was in danger of being robbed by the person who cursed her at the ATM.

“The victim thought that she was jinxed by a witchdoctor, and handed over all the money to the so-called SAPS members.”

The two suspects were arrested for common robbery and might be linked to 39 other robberies.

Boksburg North police will investigate the case.

The suspects were expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrates Court on Monday.
