Six-year-old puts animals ahead of herself
While most children would welcome copious amounts of presents on their sixth birthday; another had plans of giving all hers away.
This was before Evelyn Patrick told her daughter, Ashleigh’s (6), that she already had too many presents.
Ashleigh responded by telling her mother that she would donate the presents to people less fortunate.
The two decided that they would ask Ashleigh’s friends for a R50 contribution on her birthday, instead of presents.
The Grade R St Columba’s Pre-primary pupil and Farrarmere resident decided to donate the R1 720 she received on her birthday (March 19) to the Benoni SPCA.
Evelyn, who describes her daughter as gentle and compassionate, said Ashleigh was very shy when she handed over the money to the SPCA.
Evelyn suggested that she donate the money to Wildlife in Crisis.
Ashleigh, however, had other ideas and responded by saying: “Mom, don’t you care about dogs and animals?”
“Did you see they don’t have blankets and things?”
Her mother was not surprised by her generosity.
“I was not shocked, but touched,” said Evelyn.
“She is very giving and generous.”
Ashleigh regularly donates her clothes and toys to charities.
Evelyn thanked Ashleigh’s classmates for their contribution to the cause.
