St Dunstan’s to get Astro turf field
Within about five months St Dunstan’s College will have an Astro turf hockey field.
“The best hockey players in the world play on Astro turf,” said Alan Thompson, St Dunstan’s reactor.
“Our focus is on developing excellence in sports, that is why we saw the need to have the best sports facilities.”
He added that he is absolutely delighted that his pupils will now play on the best hockey field.
The school is now in the design process; they are busy with the earth works and putting the power supply into place before they can start.
There are currently eight hockey teams at St Dunstan’s.
“There are no Astro turf facilities on the East Rand, so our hockey teams spent most of their time travelling to Johannesburg to practise and to play matches,” Thompson said.
“We feel that the new field will also encourage more pupils to play hockey.
When asked if the public will be allowed to use the field, Thompson said: “We will have to see what the demand is; we would like to contribute to the community.”
He added that allowing the public to use the field will also depend on its availability.
The school introduced its first rugby festival this year, and it aims to introduce a hockey festival, next year.
“We have a 10-year development plan and, in April, we are breaking the soil to build a set of new classrooms,” said Thompson.
“After the classrooms and the Astro turf have been established, a multimedia centre, which will consist of a music centre, library, auditorium and art facility, is next on our cards.”
