Local designer’s work recognised

Dwell Magazine recently voted a Benoni designer's bench as one of the seven finds at a Cape Town design indaba.

Designer Neil Grantham, of Rynfield, was recognised for his Parque Bench, at the event, which ran from February 29 to March 3.

The piece was described on Dwell’s website as “evoking both a small hull and a boardwalk in the best possible ways”.

“Depending on the angle of approach, the curves may not be plainly visible at first.”

Grantham said the bench’s three frames are based on the segmental arch.

“As the pressure is applied to the top, it deflects that stress down to the bottom,” he explained on the website.

“The idea was that the slats seem to float in the end.”

The 28-year-old industrial designer and owner of Neil G Studio, was pleased with the recognition.

“It’s a huge privilege and we feel really proud of the achievement,” he said.

Neil G Studio started operating last year, with the focus on furniture and lighting designs.

The studio’s products are constructed from wood, ranging from rare hard woods to locally sourced woods and boards.

Grantham strives to achieve sustainability and product desirability, ensuring the company’s creations are original and made with high-quality materials.

Grantham said he has a passion for traditional woodworking methods, but also explores contemporary and innovative methods of wood joinery and manufacturing.

The young designer said his clientele consists of local architects, as well as clients abroad, including London.

He hopes to grow his business and create employment at the same time.
