Thanks for help, support after robbery

Lara Cunningham writes by email:

We moved our parents into a retirement village in Brentwood Park, Benoni.

We thought they would be safe, with security guards, electric fences and burglar proofing on the windows.

At about 1am on Thursday, March 21, while sleeping, they were attacked in their bed by four armed criminals/thugs, with a revolver, a knife and a monkey wrench.

They threatened my parents constantly, until about 1.20am, while ransacking their home.

They even threatened to cut off my mom’s finger, to get at her ring.

Their pleading prevented this.

Thankfully both my mom and dad acted in a calm manner throughout the terrifying ordeal.

These thugs entered through an open window, removing the burglar bars with ease.

They managed to gain access to the estate over an electric fence, and climbed onto a picket fence that should not have been there in the first place.

No alarm was triggered in the guard house as they gained entry.

They stole all my parents’ jewellery, television, cameras, cell phones and many sentimental items that can never be replaced.

So, to those of you who buy stolen goods, just think of the innocent people who have lost their precious belongings.

The security guards responded immediately after my dad pressed the panic button, and he then phoned 1011 for the police, who arrived within minutes.

A big thank you goes to the Benoni police, who responded immediately, and to all the security guards in the complex, and the surrounding armed response officers.
