Miché relives her visit to Austria
Miché Roberts, a matriculant from Willowmoore High and immediate past president of the Benoni Interact Club, was elected as an exchange student for a short-term exchange programme last year, and left in December, to spend two months in Austria.
Roberts shared some of her experiences travelling abroad with Benoni Rotarians, at the induction dinner of the new Willowmoore High Interact Club president.
When the City Times spoke to Miché in May, last year, she was very excited about her trip, but said her main focus was still to finish matric and concentrate on the Interact Club. In her presentation she told Rotarians about the Ehrich family, with whom she lived during her stay in the town Hallein, in Salzburg, in Austria.
Miché said she found it amusing that people were under the impression that South Africans do not live civilised lifestyles, and she had to correct them. She introduced a few Austrian traditions to guests at the dinner and spoke of her new experiences, such as skiing and shopping at a market in the “quaint” town of Hallein.
She also read a few extracts from the diary she kept during her time spe nt there. “I thought I was an open-minded person, but as I stepped out of the plane I realised I am not an open-minded person at all,” concluded Miché.
She ended by thanking Rotary and Willowmoore High for the opportunity and encouraging her fellow youths to jump at the same opportunity if it presents itself.
Miché handed over the Interact presidency to Junior Matlala on the evening. She has been part of the club since 2009 and said she will miss being part of it.
