Three years since Barnard murder

Tuesday marked the three-year anniversary of Chantelle Barnard's (20) death.

”She is missed,” said Chantelle’s emotional mother, Suzette.

”People say it gets easier, but it does not; it just gets worse.”

Suzette said she would visit her daughter’s grave, at the Alberton Cemetery, with her husband, Fanie, on Tuesday, to remember her daughter’ life.

The bereaved mother has become a regular visitor to the grave site since her daughter’s burial on April 7, 2011.

She said she has visited the site every week since Chantelle’s death and has placed a concrete bench next to the grave, on which she sits during her regular visits.

Suzette said the cemetery staff often ask her to leave the premises when the time comes for them to lock the gates.

Benoni SAPS media liaison officer Lieut Nomsa Sekele said, on Friday, that police are still searching for the accused, Jurgen Vandekeere.

Vandekeere has been on the run since September 9, after failing to appear in the Delmas High Court.

There were reported sightings of the accused at an airport in Maputo, in November.

He is accused of raping and murdering Chantelle, in Brentwood Park, on April 1, 2011, after she went missing earlier that day.

Suzette said she is angry that the accused is allowed to live a normal life.

The emotional mother said police have forgotten about her daughter’s case and that she has not heard from them since Vandekeere skipped his court appearance.

She vowed to not let her daughter be forgotten.

Suzette is in the process of having a web site set up in her daughter’s honour.

She hopes this will create awareness of the accused, who is on the run, and remind people of her daughter’s death.

Anyone who has information on Vandekeere’s whereabouts may contact WO Peter Mbonani on 082 301 2276.
