Rifles, ammunition found, murder suspect nabbed

The Putfontein police recovered five firearms and hundreds of rounds of live ammunition, during the arrest of a murder suspect.

Consts Tebogo Koko and Joseph Makofane, in conjunction with the EMPD tracing unit, followed information to a plot in Geldenhys Road, Putfontein, on April 6.

“They were investigating a shooting incident, which left a man dead in Mayfield Extension Nine, on March 14,” said Putfontein Police Station commander Lieut Col Khumbulani Mbatha.

Mbatha said that, upon searching the property, police found an R5, R1, two .303 rifles, one 9mm pistol and 800 live rounds of ammunition for different firearms.

One of the suspects has already been linked positively to the murder.

They will appear soon in the Benoni Magistrates Court.

In a separate incident, which happened recently, four Putfontein constables, Lloyd Modika, Nelly Nkosi, Libson Ntlane and Jeffrey Motloutsi, recovered an AK47 and a short gun, after searching a red Toyota Camry during a stop-and-search operation in the area.

In another incident, the Putfontein police arrested four men, who shot the owner of the house in his private parts during a house robbery, on March 31.

Mbatha said the men broke into the property during the night, woke the owner and demanded cash.

They then shot him, before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.

Mbatha said Sgt Simon Mosako investigated the matter and managed to arrest the suspects and recover a .38 revolver.

“I would like to congratulate all the officers for a job well done, and also the EMPD Tracing Unit for their assistance,” he added.

Mbatha called on all the victims who have been shot in the Mayfield area to come forward.

“We suspect that the men arrested in possession of five firearms might have been involved in may other shootings,” he said.

Those who would like to come forward can contact Capt Matome William Ntswane on 082 822 7719.
