Police shoot at protestors

The Public Order Policing (POP) fired at protestors in Kingsway, on the morning of April 10.

Two people, a man and a woman, were injured.

Residents of Kingsway gathered, with the aim of marching to deliver a memorandum at the Benoni Customer Care Centre.

But the illegal march was stopped at the traffic lights in Kingsway, by the police.

Angry residents then blockaded the road and prevented motorists from passing through.

“Police intervened, but stones were hurled at them,” said Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele.

Sekele said officers retaliated by firing rubber bullets and the crowd dispersed.

Both the woman and the man were shot in their lower bodies.

The woman was transported to hospital, but the man ran away.
