Five-year-old disabled child raped in Western Extension

The Benoni police have arrested a 43-year-old man, who allegedly raped a five-year-old child on May 24.

The child, who is reported to have a mental disability, spends weekdays with her aunt at a house in Western Extension, when her mother is at work.

Police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the mother takes her child home only over weekends.

“When the mother took the child home this past weekend, she noticed that the child had thrush, while bathing her,” said Sekele.

The child was also jumpy when her mother bathed her private parts, and started crying a lot.

Her mother kept asking the child what was wrong.

“The child mentioned her aunt’s husband’s name and showed her mother what he allegedly did to her,” said Sekele.

The child was taken to a doctor where it was confirmed that she had been penetrated.

The matter was reported to the police and the man was arrested.

Sekele said the man was charged with rape and that the case will be investigated by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
