Benoni Rotary wins R25 000 for charity

The Rotary Club of Benoni did the town proud, taking home a cash prize of R25 000 for charity from a recent Carnival Charity "FUNdraiser".

At this event, five Ekurhuleni-based Rotary organisations participated in a choice of three fundraising games of Spin the Wheel, Carnival Wars and Blackjack, on Thursday, May 29.

The objective of the FUNdraiser was to offer each Rotary club the opportunity to raise funds for the charity of their choice.

The participating clubs, the Rotary Club of Benoni, Boksburg Rotary Club, Boksburg Lake Rotary Club, Germiston Rotary Club and Nigel Rotary Club were selected, based on the special projects they submitted for consideration.

The criteria their projects had to meet to qualify were to dovetail with the Carnival City and Afrisun Trust key CSI focus areas, namely social welfare (homes caring for abused women and children), education and health (paediatric wards, local hospitals and clinics).

Each team was made up of two representatives from the club and another from their local newspaper, who received R2 500 in free gaming tokens.

After an hour’s training, another hour of playing time followed.

For earning the most points (20 920 points) the Rotary Club of Benoni won the whopping cash prize of R25 000, while Boksburg Lake placed second, Germiston third, Boksburg fourth and Nigel fifth.

The money raised will be used for the project of the charity of the winner’s choice.

The charity to which the Rotary Club of Benoni will donate their winnings had not been decided at the time of going to print.
