Children learn their rights
Children from Actonville learned about their rights as part of the Child Protection Week commemoration, held on May 29.
National Child Protection Week (CPW) is commemorated in South Africa annually to raise awareness of the rights of children, as articulated in the Children’s Act of 2005.
Grade Eight learners from different schools gathered at Lesabe Primary School, to listen to representatives from different organisations.
The organisations included the Actonville SAPS, Sanca, Ekurhuleni Metro officials, the EMPD and committee members from Wards 30 and 29.
Capt Absolom Masango, from the Benoni Child Protection Unit, addressed the children on their rights and added that the police treat child abuse seriously.
The children learned about their body parts, which they should not allow anyone to touch.
These included breasts and private parts.
“Also, when people send you to buy something at the shops, first seek permission from your parents, so that they know where you are,” said Masango.
He told the children to report any abusive behaviour to their teachers or the police.
Sanca’s Clifford Jele warned against the use of drugs.
He told the children that they will lose purpose in life if they start using drugs.
