Fit fans supply warmth
The Fit Fans blanket run took place at Chief Luthuli Park, on June 7, when a total of 225 blankets, as well as socks and hats, were donated.
They were distributed between Project Feed the Children, founded by Shaun Botha, and the School of Peace, in Yeoville Santedigio.
The 10km run began at 7am, in Rynfield, on the corner of Robinson and Pretoria roads and led round to Putfontein Road, through Cloverdene.
The route was strategically coordinated, so that people would be able to ascertain perspective from the suburbs to the shanty town, in the ice cold weather.
At the start of the run, it was two degrees Celsius — nothing better than the chill to gain perspective.
The runners on the day were Sarah Haylock, Megon Norman, Nicola Nichols, Lana Mclean, Toinette Pruis, Sheremey Warne, Alicia Pillay and Liesel van Schalkwyk.
“Our aim is to create awareness of need and to create zero distinction between people of any given class; people are people and everyone is deserving,” said Haylock.
The Fit Fans blanket run will become an annual event and planning for next year’s event is underway.
The organising committee, Sarah Haylock, the founder, Megon Norman and Nicola Nichols would like to thank Rynfield Pre-Primary, God First Church, East Rand, and Moonlit Rose Photography, who generously donated without hesitation.
