Churches come to the aid of the homeless

The youth groups of two churches teamed up to provide winter wear to hundreds of people, on Saturday, June 28.

The Christian Teaching Centre (CTC) youth ministry, CTC Youth Flava (which is based in Actonville), and the Gilgal East Ministry youth wing, Cool4Christ (based in Boksburg), were involved in the hand-overs.

Approximately 500 blankets, 400 beanies, 300 pairs of gloves and 50 jersies found their way into the hands of the homeless on the day.

The two groups made their first stop at the Actonville Squash Courts, where they were greeted by hundreds of people.

The groups then proceeded to Lahore Court, the Benoni Central Swimming Pool and Cason Road, in Boksburg.

Cool4Christ member Darryl Devar said the items came though donations, company sponsorships, the respective churches and the youths themselves.

The joint outreach also distributed pamphlets to people, about woman and child abuse.

Devar said the street dwellers’ contact details were collected in the hope of contacting them at a later stage, when work opportunities arise.

There are also plans to provide these people with skills, in order for them to find employment.

Devar envisages a shelter for destitute people at a later stage.
