Eight Numsa strikers released

Eight of the 13 Numsa strikers who were arrested during a violent protest last week were released at noon today.

This came after hundreds of strikers wearing red Numsa T-shirts and brandishing sticks and knobkerries gathered outside the Benoni Magistrates Court today (July 11), demanding the release of their fellow workers from custody.

A total of 13 strikers were arrested during the violent strike that hit Benoni, last week.

As they were appearing in court today, fellow members chanted and sang struggle songs outside the court demanding their release.

Numsa shop steward Mpho Mhlakwana said they were awaiting for five more to be released.

Mhlakwana said their members are not criminals but workers fighting for their salary increase and therefore, should be released.

Numsa has rejected the latest wage offer.
