Young Benoni golfer flies SA flag high in Germany
He claimed German Junior Masters title with impressive three-under-par performance

Ebotse Links junior golfer Colby Barnard made his mark on the international stage, winning the Boys 6 division at the US Kids Golf German Junior Masters in Germany.
The young golfer carded rounds of 36 and 33 to finish three under par and secure the title, capping an impressive performance against fellow junior golfers.
However, the victory came as a surprise to Colby, who initially thought the competition had ended in a tie.
“I was very, very happy and proud of myself. It was special to wear the South African flag when I got the trophy,” he said.

Colby credited his strong driving and chipping for helping him produce the winning performance. Advice from coach Grant Veenstra also played an important role, while practice ahead of the tournament helped him adapt to the unfamiliar playing conditions.
“I practised a lot at the course on the two days before because the grass was different to at home,” said Colby.
The St Dunstan’s College learner said golf is a sport that gives him an opportunity to spend quality time with his family and friends, particularly when his dad caddies for him.

His golfing journey began at just four-and-a-half years old, when his parents enrolled him for coaching with Kevin Edwards at Ebotse.

Since then, his passion for the sport has continued to grow, with his parents, brother and coaches providing valuable support along the way.
“Mostly just thank you,” he said when asked what he would like to tell those who have supported him.
Competing in Germany also gave Colby the opportunity to experience a different golfing environment and meet young players from other countries.

He enjoyed making new friends, including golfers from Indonesia and Poland, and discovered another highlight of the trip: Germany’s famous giant pretzels.
“It would be nice if we had them here,” he said.
Despite already enjoying international success, Colby has his sights set on bigger goals. He hopes to compete in the World Championships at Pinehurst while still a junior golfer, with the Open Championship a dream for his adult years.

Colby’s dad, Tyron, a hockey commentator and presenter, said the big goal is the world champs in 2028.
“Colby went to Germany on the back of good form in the US Kids Gauteng series and the Big 5 SA Open. His score gives him the highest priority status possible in US Kids, so he has qualified for the world champs in Pinehurst,” he said.
Colby’s next big assignment is the Venice Open next August, which will prepare him for the 2028 world champs.
