House robbers caught after police chase this afternoon

The SAPS, in conjunction with the CPF and the metro policem arrested four suspects after a chase that started in Northmead and ended in Elm Road, in the afternoon of August 8,

The four men derailed a gate at a property in Northmead and broke the house window after gaining access.

“But the domestic worker screamed and somehow, someone phoned the authorities,” said CPF Sector Two deputy chairperson Awie du Plooy, who was part of the chase.

The police and the CPF members drove to the address.

Whey they arrived at the property they noticed a green Toyota Conquest with four occupants driving out of the property.

“It drove away at a high speed when the police tried to stop them,” said Du Plooy.

The police, CPF members and the metro police gave chase.

The four men abandoned their car along Elm Road and ran into the veld.

“We chased them on foot and they finally stopped when they got tired of running,” said Du Plooy.

All were were arrested and police said nothing was taken from the house.

Benoni cluster police spokesman Capt Alfred Nakana confirmed the arrest and said the men would be charged with attempted housebreaking.

They are due to appear soon in the Benoni Magistrates Court.
