Halloween walk a frightfully festive event

Kids and adults alike enjoyed an afternoon creeping through the city’s historical suburb.

Ghouls, princesses and superheroes filled the streets of Western Extension as giggles and laughter pierced the usually quiet neighbourhood during this year’s Trick or Treat on Russel.

On Halloween (October 31), 300 ‘spook-tacularly’ dressed revellers pointed their brooms to Benoni’s oldest suburb to load up on sweet treats, while supporting Benoni SPCA and The Murphy Cat Project (TMCP).

After completing a loop or two, all fangs pointed to Big G’s Quarterdeck where entrants mystified and enchanted judges as part of the fancy dress contest.

“This year we decided to host the walk from 14:00 to 17:00 to allow younger kids to enjoy the festivities,” said organiser and life-long resident of Western Extension Ivonne Taylor.

“We were apprehensive; thinking the heat may be scarier than the costumes but we are overjoyed with the community’s support.

“Not only did their participation assist two local animal organisations, but we hope that the walk gave them the opportunity to marvel in the rich history which is Western Extension.”

Assembling their frightful crew, Lauren Miller of Lakefield said that they were excited about participating in the walk as a family.

“It is lovely that residents and business banded together to host a wholesome family event, asking for nothing but donations towards some of the city’s animal populations,” she said.

“My husband has stepped completely into character as Jason from Friday the 13th – and despite his frozen face, he is also happy to be here.”

Taylor thanked local businesses, The Place, Pam Golding, Hammond Pole Attorneys and Rizi’s Creations, for manning ‘boo-worthy’ trick-or-treat stands as well as Benoni CPF Sector 4 members for ensuring participant safety.

“A special thanks goes to all the volunteers as well as Big G’s for hosting the best dressed competition.

“The event was a resounding success thanks to the spirit of Benoni residents.”
