The award was presented to the metro at the Bontle ke Botho awards ceremony, hosted by the department of agriculture and rural development, at the Lakes Hotel, on Friday, August 22.
“Ekurhuleni will now go on to represent the province at the greenest municipality competition, which is run by national department of environmental affairs, an award which the city won last year,” said Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni media liaison.
Bontle ke Botho is an initiative established by the Gauteng department of agriculture and rural development in 2002.
“It is aimed at encouraging sustainable environmental practices in communities, at school, ward and municipal level.”
Member of the mayoral committee for environmental management in Ekurhuleni Vuyewla Mabena opened the ceremony by stating that the city was honoured to host the prestigious event.
“As Ekurhuleni, we have been participating in the project since its inception and we are proud to say that we are always well represented,” she said.
“This project has had a positive impact on many of our communities and schools, and it’s important that we come up with innovations that will ensure that it’s sustained for the next 20 years.”
The winners include Kgalema Intermediate School in Daveyton, which walked away with a R20 000 third prize for sustained projects, in the schools section.
