Outrage over students allegedly having sex in school toilets

Two pupils of Actonville's Liverpool Secondary School were allegedly caught having sex in the school toilets, on September 5.

A concerned resident, who notified the City Times, was outraged that the school is trying to “cover up” the matter.

The resident alleges that there was never a proper disciplinary hearing, that neither of the learners was disciplined and that this has left other pupils feeling that they are not being treated equally at the school.

The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed that a boy learner entered the girls’ toilets with his alleged girlfriend and that they locked themselves in one of the cubicles, on the date mentioned.

According to department spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane, the department is outraged by these allegations and condemns this conduct in the strongest terms.

She said the matter was reported to the principal immediately and both learners were served with five days suspension, last week.

They are now back at school.

“The disciplinary hearing of these learners is scheduled for September 25,” she added.

The City Times spoke to the principal, Prem Maharaj, who confirmed that the pupils had locked themselves in the cubicle, but said “no sex” took place.

The principal said he immediately called the learners’ parents to the school.

But, contrary to what the department claimed, Maharaj said both learners were punished by their parents, by keeping them at home for a week.

He added that, when the pupils returned to school on Monday (September 15), he reprimanded them and they both wrote letters of apology to him, promising to never do it again.
